Bodegas Naia work bases its argument on the selection of old Verdejo vines planted according to the traditional system of glass.
Eulogio Calleja, winemaker long professional career and very knowledgeable about the wine potential of this area, is an author and technical manager of the range of wines.
The grape
The Verdejo itself justifies the existence of the appellation. This is a somewhat rustic grape that has made perfectly acclimated to the harsh conditions of the Castilian plateau. Berries and medium bunch, and some large nuggets, has been developed in the area of Rueda to the point to speak of a single variety, and in spite of that, both inside and outside Spain, we can find a bunch of varieties with very similar names (verdelho, godello, etc.).
It seems born to withstand any weather adversity; its thick skin makes it resistant to high temperatures and drought of summer Castilian; defends his thick skin the risks of rot before harvest the grapes when it rains. Perhaps for these reasons and takes well over half the vineyards in the DO Rueda, planted decades on gravelly soils were someday bed of the River Douro.
It would suffice, without any support, to sponsor a young white gorgeous. Realize, however, in Rueda, with the timely help of two other white varieties. The first is the Sauvignon Blanc, imported from the Loire and Graves, it adds to the mix its tropical aromas, sometimes floral and balsamic. It is also the first, considering its short growing cycle, enter the cellars.
The second is the Viura, Macabeo call in other regions, whose plantation was promoted long ago when people did not quite know, or believe, in the aristocratic Verdejo. It brings lightness and a citric point to the mix.
