Aalto was founded in 1998 by Mariano Garcia (from Bodegas Mauro and former oenologist from Vega Sicilia) together with Javier Zaccagnini (Bodegas Ossian). It was launched in February 1999, with the financial support of several investors enthusiastic about quality wine. Mariano García is the oenologist and Antonio Moral is the head of viticulture.

Aalto has 42 hectares of top quality vineyards in three sub-regions of the Ribera del Duero, 2 in the province of Valladolid and 1 in the province of Burgos. Of these, 32has belong to hillside estates that are being carefully planted with old Tinta Fina clones. The remaining 10has have already been acquired from old 60-year-old vines in the province of Burgos, and have been growing since 2000 with low yields of ?2,500/ha. and strict quality standards.

Harvesting at Aalto is done by hand and in small boxes; once in the winery it is selected on two selection tables.
