History

The entrepreneur Felipe García began to distil green anis in a small family distillery in 1894, and at his death, in 1919, his son Nicomedes García inherited the distillery and made numerous mixtures until he found an anise that was different from the rest. At that time he patented the brand Anís La Castellana, as well as its characteristic glass bottle, its labels and collars.

During the course of the Spanish Civil War the brand began a major advertising campaign. It was positioned in the national side, while its competitor, the Chinchón, remained in the republican side; For it used the slogan "Anís La Castellana, the anise of Spain". His campaign was also aimed at the fighters, popularizing in the newspapers of the time different poems, highlighting the titled "For the soldier's bonus," which began by calling him the best liquor and ended up inviting relatives to send bottles to The soldiers on the battlefield.

In the 1940s it carried out a major expansion of the factory, and established a commercial network in all provincial capitals and important municipalities. Finally, he patented the stopper and started an advertising campaign that managed to consolidate the brand as the first in the country, selling more than seven million liters per year. Between the years 1942 and 1943 the campaign was carried out starting from the refranero Castilian adapted to the mark and its advertising wedges in radio left mark in the memory of several generations of Spaniards, with slogan like "much better than the best one", compared with Others mythical as those made by Cola Cao.

After his death in 1989, the two brands of liquor belonging to Nicomedes García (Whiskey DYC and Anís La Castellana) were acquired by the Domecq Group, absorbed in 1994 by the British company Allied Domecq, then Pernod Ricard and now Beam Sunctory. At present the brand continues with its factory in the province of Segovia, located in Valverde del Majano, in an industrial estate that bears the name of Nicomedes García.
