ElaborationThe grapes come from vineyards planted at an altitude of 550 metres at the foot of the Alce mountain in the municipality of Alfaro, in La Rioja baja. Its soils are mainly calcareous, clay-ferrous and with a lot of pebbles. The climate is Mediterranean, with influence of the Atlantic, with a great difference in temperature between winter and summer, which allows an excellent ripening of the grape. Harvesting is carried out manually, taking advantage of low solar intensity hours to keep the grapes fresh. Once in the winery, the grapes are de-stemmed and undergo a selection process before maceration at low temperature for 23 days to extract all the aromas.
La Montesa Reserva is aged for 18 months in oak barrels with Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, with a small amount of Mazuelo and Graciano.
CuriosityLa Montesa is a red wine from the D.O.Ca. La Rioja is made by Bodegas Palacios Remondo. Its technical director, Álvaro Palacios, is known for making one of the most coveted wines in Spain, L'Ermita, in his Priorat winery.
