The GARNACHA has traditionally been the second most widely planted grape variety in Rioja. Locally it is called La Maldita due to the difficulty of making high quality wines due to its low yields which are not very profitable for the winegrower. The GARNACHA has traditionally been the second most widely planted grape variety in Rioja. Locally it is called La Maldita due to the difficulty of making high quality wines due to its low yields which are not very profitable for the winegrower. For this reason, many have preferred to uproot it and replace it with other varieties.

The wines of La Maldita aim to recover this Riojan heritage, demonstrating that it is excellent GARNACHA land. For this purpose, the following vineyards have been selected in high areas, planted in soils where this variety expresses itself at its best.

Half a century ago, GARNACHA was the most widely cultivated variety in La Rioja. Its fluctuating yields (Malditos) and the standardisation of Tempranillo led to its succumbing to other varieties, due to its unattractiveness to the wine grower and its low value as a quality variety.

During the last three decades, the Malditos vineyards of GARNACHA were reduced by two thirds, from 14,000 hectares to almost 5,000 hectares found today. A large part of this vineyard is concentrated in the central and lower areas, leaving small areas of cultivation in the Rioja Alta, maintained mainly by the cultivation of clarets of this grape variety.

Today, the GARNACHA vineyards in Rioja occupy almost 5,000 hectares, a good part of which is of a high average age, a living legacy of that heritage from more than half a century ago. La Maldita wines incorporate vineyards from areas where this variety is best adapted, depending on the wine being produced.

They work with red and white Grenache grapes from the municipalities of Tudelilla (Rioja Baja), Villamediana, Alberite (Rioja Central), Badarán, San Asensio and San Vicente (Rioja Alta).
