Lagavulin Distillery officially dates from 1816, when John Archibald Campbell Johnston and built two distilleries on the site. One of them became Lagavulin, taking over the other, which is not exactly known. Records show illegal distillation of at least ten illegal in place as far back as 1742 date distilleries, however.

In the 19th century, several legal battles continued with his neighbor Laphroaig, produced after a Lagavulin Distillers, Sir Peter Mackie, the Laphroaig distillery leased. It is said that Mackie tried to copy style Laphroaig. Since water and peat facilities Lagavulin was different from that in Laphroaig, the result was different. The Lagavulin Distillery is located in the town of the same name.
